Backyard Lightning

They barked like they had
lightning in their throats;
a horrific storm of terror
safe behind a hurricane fence.

I went over, and stuck my fingers
through the security of their threat,
the ferocity of their thunder
flashed with fiercely licking tongues.

Nice alliteration at the end.

The incongruity of fiercely licking tongues made me smile, but sometimes they can lick you to death! ;-) Nice riff off of a hurricane fence.

there's a saying in slovenia, something like a dog that barks doesn't bite, and you seemed to have it experienced quite literally :)
really enjoyed this one!

Thanks Vaughn!! A good comment!!

Thanks Joyce!!

Cathy, these are little yappers. They yap, yap, yap til I put my fingers through the fence then they lick, lick, lick.

Andrew there are a bunch of them here. Just a real PetsMart community.

Thanks Kai!!

Thanks for noticing Russell. It wasn't by accident either. Mrs. Cannon would've been proud of me.

Thanks M!! Glad you caught it.

Polona, I kind of know these dogs. I don't make it a habit of sticking my hand out to a barking dog. Thank you!!
