A drowning man grabs for rescue
at the cold, watery hands
stealing his last breath.
Splashed supplications splay the air,
screams are desperate offerings,
sacrifices on fading ripples.
The sky is neither blue, nor gray,
reason disappears like smoke in fog.
A drowning man grabs for rescue,
at the only thing within his reach.

Just like Tim, it made me gasp! I'm not fond of water. Like C.W. Fields said-"I won't drink it, fish f... in it." Sorry, I couldn't help it :)
I almost drowned once Pat!
It was a very long time ago though,
but I was sort of gasping for air too!
Good poem, even if it did make me gasp!
Margie
Eerie . . .
v.cool.
my sort of thing :)
You keep putting forth great offerings.
so dark indeed
good one
though i hope the mood/idea comes from imagination rather than experience
cheers
Unfortunately he isn't drowning because he can't swim. Someone is doing him in. Very lively poem, and the nightmare of many-a-folks, I dare say.
I hate water.
I would have loved to have heard you read this one — it's chock full of evocative sounds. Very affecting, Pat.
Dark indeed. I am still pondering "The sky is neither blue, nor gray". "Good" one.

Hey Pat, just an FYI. I'm moving my fiction to JaneDoughnut and making DoughnutJane invite-only. So send me an email so I know where to send the invite!
Dark indeed- I think life drowned this man
dark and brooding but oh so good!

Wonderfully frightful! I don't have any other words.
I love this, Pat. You have captured the desperation - I wonder where you were to write it???
As I read the poem I could see it taking place in my mind. I love poetry that I can see. This is deep on so many levels and I love it!
"The sky is neither blue, nor gray, reason disappears like smoke in fog."
I have felt that many times. The aftermath:
"Azure of the next new day always takes my breath away"
Thanks, Paul.
What is in your reach?
Powerful imagery you evoke...
Eerie...makes me wonder what each of us grabs for.
