Scent Of A Rose

I saw you in the shadows
of a dream I had,
riding wild horses
on the petal of a rose.

Drifting like snowflakes
on a dark silent night,
you held out your hand
and I reached with mine.

Light broke our hearts,
and swept away dream,
but your memory is mine
in the scent of a rose.

Pat, you express the uncertain, translucent, gauzey quality of a dream very well in this. "Light broke our hearts" is a great line! Lovely poem.

Long time lurker, love your poems.
I enjoyed your hawk adventure. The hawks and the eagles are the most majestic birds.
I am hooked on them. What an honor to be so close to your hawk.
there is a web site that lets you follow a pair of eagles and loons in Maine. Its a thrill to watch them defend their eggs and watch mother nature up close via a web cam. the web site is
http://www.briloon.org/ed/looncam.htm

check out the site, i find myself checking in many times a day once the activity begins. Last year the eagles started in March and the loons in April, (i think). I check in to the eagle cam daily and have caught the pair a few times around 7 am est.

enjoy your poetry and thanks for sharing

I love this one!
I had a strange dream last night in which members of my family who have died were standing in a line at a family party, watching all of us. Strange. It was weird to see their faces, smiling and quiet. I haven't had a dream like that before -- who knows what will happen tonight. :)

Truly lovely. Very good one. Diferent tone and reach than many of your other poems. Reminds me of the Buddhism image of the heart floating on a lotus blossom.

You involve several senses with this poem, Pat. If this is an experiment in technique, it is very successful. I liked it a lot.

For dreamers, and not just for them!:) I’ve been thinking about this one for a while!? It’s not only beautiful, it’s thought-provoking as well. Maybe it’s because I’ve learned (through reading interpretations of Persian classical poets) to associate ‘rose’ with ‘mind concentration’. In Arabic and Persian, where vowels are not used in writing, the Arabic root WRD can either be pronounced as Ward (rose) or Wird (mind concentrations), so ‘rose’ has been chosen by mystical writer to signify the latter. Hence, through mind concentration back to the realm of our original dream. Another, quite non-poetic, idea can also be discerned here, namely that of indoctrination. One of the basic techniques of indoctrination combines the raising of emotional pitch and the slogans and/or word images. In fact this must be a very basic mental process. Highly emotional events become deeply anchored I our minds. Which can be both good and bad. It is believed that when a poem can be interpreted in two diametrically opposed ways (concentration/indoctrination), the piece is a very profound one, reflecting objective truth.!?:)

Andrew, you comment reminds me of a Bible verse in Hebrews, I think, about how we're surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. I believe that. Now I'm curious, how have your dreams been since?

Thanks Floots!!

Dsnake, actually I wrote it while playing my guitar and had a tune with it. But, that ain't for publication. I think that definitely helped the rhythm.
