The Next Taste

She lived life
like a kid scraping fudge
from the sides a bowl,
one dark glob,
after sweet, dark glob,
lips and chin
smeared with the evidence
of the joy in her years.
Her bowl lost flavor, and
the rich, sugary stains
faded
from the reflection
in cold, fixed eyes;
the next taste
was sweetest yet...
