Sorting Echoes

They called at 8 p.m. last night
while we were listening to seagulls
squawk about being seagulls,
waves and sand arguing over boundaries
neither have, nor ever will honor,
an over-the-shoulder retort of a red hot sun
shoved into the silence of a watery night.
We decided to wait to return the call,
our ears were busy sorting through
the echoes of all we’d just heard.

This is awesome Pat! So many lines I love like: 'waves and sand arguing over boundaries' and: 'shoved into the silence of a watery night.'
One can see this so vividly in the mind.

Pat, you are making me homesick. I can see our beaches as clearly as if I just stepped onto the sand at the Coast Guard Station. Beautiful.

Nicely done. I especially like, "waves and sand arguing over boundaries" and "shoved into the silence of a watery night"...again, I really hope to see this some day in "print".

Loved it, and I think all arguments are temporary set-backs in life's quest to find wholeness in the universe.

Water, to me, speaks of rebirth, and the waves lapping...well, enjoy their sweet sound. May you kiss the love of your life from heaven, and may those kisses spread wide open, like the garden of eden and all that follows, including sin itself.

What else have we, but...all that falls within and between the lines of poetry?

Sometimes it is not easy to sort out echoes..

this is truly wonderful. I love the way you captured a busy scene with people and rendered it in a window of our world reflected in nature.

I particularly love the retorts of the red hot sun and the waves and sand arguing over boundaries. Really made me smile.

I know that moment, Pat, and you've captured it very well.
