Giving Way

Autumn is nudging the back of Summer,
Summer is refusing to budge,
not ready to come in from play;
there are new blooms on the Gardenia bush,
with tantrum temperatures close to ninety.
The inevitable is going to happen,
leaves will tint-up with color,
sweaters and light jackets will be bodyguards
fending off cooler air.
Lawnmowers, nearing hibernation,
are devouring every green blade they see;
Autumn is pushing the back of Summer,
and Summer’s grudgingly giving way.

Or, as in NC, the leaves will prematurely drop straight off the tree from lack of rain!

Good poem Pat.

At long last - just kidding. I think summer is great but sometimes the heat was just too much.

Yes, Summer is being a bit stubborn here too. There is an inevitability coming as your poem well describes.
